About the role

The Operations Supervisor / Chief Engineer is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the hospital’s physical plant, utilities infrastructure, and critical building systems. Reporting to the Director of Facilities Management, this role provides leadership and supervision to plant operations and maintenance staff while ensuring uninterrupted support to patient care operations. Acting as the designated Chief Engineer, the position ensures compliance with all applicable regulations administered by Alberta Boilers Safety Association, the Alberta Safety Codes Act, Power Engineers Regulation, and applicable CSA standards. Responsibilities include oversight of boilers, steam systems, HVAC, chillers, emergency generators, electrical distribution, water treatment systems, and building automation systems. The role is accountable for maintaining required staffing levels for regulated plant operations, coordinating inspections and certifications, maintaining operational and compliance records, and ensuring all systems are operated safely and efficiently. The Operations Supervisor / Chief Engineer also leads emergency response activities related to utility failures, equipment outages, and critical infrastructure incidents. Additional responsibilities include supervising and developing operations staff, managing preventive maintenance programs, coordinating contractors and shutdowns, supporting capital projects, and assisting with operational budgeting and planning. The position plays a key role in identifying infrastructure risks, implementing mitigation strategies, and supporting accreditation and safety initiatives within a complex healthcare environment. This position is non-unionized.

Required Qualifications:

Qualifications include a valid Alberta 2nd Class Power Engineer Certificate of Competency with eligibility to act as Chief Engineer under provincial regulations. Minimum 5-10 years of plant operations experience, including supervisory experience in a complex institutional or healthcare environment, is preferred. Strong knowledge of steam plant operations, HVAC systems, emergency power, building automation systems, and healthcare infrastructure is required.

Strong organizational and time management skills. Ability to manage emergencies and critical incidents effectively. Knowledge of occupational health and safety practices. Ability to work collaboratively with clinical staff, contractors, and stakeholders. Proficiency in computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and Microsoft Office. Strong understanding of regulatory compliance and documentation requirements. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Working knowledge of Alberta fire and building codes. Training in Emergency Preparedness. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and written specifications. Working knowledge of a computerized maintenance system. Proficiency in Microsoft computer programs specifically; Outlook, Word, Excel. AutoCAD experience. Ability to identify and customize communication to various levels.
