About the role

Job Summary:

In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. Under the direction of the Program Manager/Program Coordinator, acts as a clinical expert and resource to nursing and other staff in the provision of patient care in the Surgical Suite. Develops plans and participates in patient care and clinical education programs in order to meet the initial and ongoing needs of the registered nurse. Assists the Program Manager/Program Coordinator in supervising, monitoring and evaluating nursing care, ensuring standards of practice are met in the OR/PAR.

Duties/Accountabilities:

1.Provides visible, accessible clinical support to the nursing staff by acting as an education resource for staff in the Birthing Program.

2.Provides Program Manager/Program Coordinator with input to the performance appraisals of staff nurses with a focus on the staff member’s knowledge, skills and attitudes.

3.Improves and enhances staff clinical competence through role modelling, teaching and ongoing development of professional skills to meet the needs of the patient, family and staff.

4.Utilizing the principles of adult education, assesses, plans, implements, conducts and evaluates Orientation, Education and Professional Development Programs for staff.

5.Develops, implements and evaluates the OR/PAR course offered to staff in conjunction with the education department.

6.Participates on hospital committees and liaises with other centres by assessing needs and developing programs for outreach education as operational requirements permit.

7.Through utilization of current research and theory, recognizes and incorporates into practice professional issues inherent in providing perioperative care to patients and their families.

8.Promotes the use of and participation in research and supports staff research activity.

9.Works collaboratively with multidisciplinary health care team members to provide quality patient care.

11.Contributes to the development of the Program Philosophy and Objectives. Develops and implements the supporting Policies and Procedures.

12.Defines Continuous Quality Improvement priorities with the Program Manager/Program Coordinator.

13.Monitors patient care needs, reports staffing, equipment and administrative concerns to the

Program Manager/Program Coordinator.

14.Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience

  • Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN with the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNP).
  • Diploma in Operating Room and three (3) years' recent high risk obstetrical operating room experience including one year in an educational or leadership role, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Completion of the Instructional Skills Workshop or Adult Education equivalent.
  • Completion of the Neonatal Resuscitation Instructor Program.
  • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
