Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) Position Summary The Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) supports the delivery of high-quality patient care by performing specimen collection, phlebotomy, specimen processing, and laboratory support functions. Working under the direction of laboratory leadership, the MLA plays a critical role in ensuring accurate specimen handling, maintaining laboratory quality standards, and supporting efficient laboratory operations in a fast-paced healthcare environment. Previous experience using Cerner and electronic health record (EHR) systems is required. Key Responsibilities Collect, label, process, and transport patient specimens, including blood, urine, and other biological samples. Perform phlebotomy procedures in accordance with established laboratory and safety protocols. Verify patient information and ensure accurate specimen identification and documentation. Enter and maintain patient and specimen information within Cerner and laboratory information systems. Prepare specimens for testing and ensure proper handling, storage, and transportation. Maintain laboratory records and documentation in accordance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements. Follow infection prevention, quality assurance, and workplace safety procedures. Clean, maintain, and prepare laboratory equipment and work areas. Monitor laboratory inventory and assist with ordering and stocking supplies. Collaborate with laboratory technologists, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to support patient care. Provide professional, compassionate, and patient-centered service while maintaining confidentiality. Qualifications Completion of a recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) program. Current MLA certification or eligibility for certification. Minimum one (1) year of recent Medical Laboratory Assistant experience preferred. Mandatory experience with Cerner and electronic health record (EHR) systems. Experience with specimen collection, processing, and phlebotomy. Strong understanding of laboratory safety, infection control, and quality assurance practices. Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced healthcare environment while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
